Our approach to organic and free-range herds

Running a healthy and robust organic pig production requires a holistic approach. Without the use of routine medication, the pigs must be able to withstand disease on their own. This requires careful planning of all aspects of production – from a well-structured vaccination programme to feed tailored for organic pigs. At Ø-Vet, we are specialists in ensuring the close contact and monitoring which are crucial to achieving high animal welfare and productivity in organic and free-range herds.

Hos Ø-Vet er vi specialister i at sikre den tætte kontakt og overvågning, der er afgørende for at opnå en høj dyrevelfærd og produktivitet i økologiske og frilandsbesætninger.

Production results and monitoring of health

A good start after weaning is essential in order to get strong pigs. At Ø-Vet, we help you ensure that both environment and feed are optimised to prevent diseases such as dysentery, Lawsonia and coli infections.

Focus on production results

Daily gain, feed consumption and health are just as important in organic production as in conventional herds. We recommend regular monitoring of health to ensure optimal results.

Slaughterhouse examinations and necropsies

We often use slaughterhouse examinations as this makes it possible for us to assess several organs at the same time and discover potential problems early on. Organs such as lungs, liver, kidneys and stomach are some of the most significant indicators of the health of the herd. When material is available, we also always necropsy on the spot to ensure a precise diagnosis.

Backfat scanning of sows and replacement gilts

The backfat on your animals can have a big influence on the production results. We therefore do routine backfat scans to ensure that your sows and replacement gilts are in the correct condition to perform optimally.

We have a veterinarian decided to organic production and free range

At Ø-Vet, we are particularly engaged in organic and free-range production. Our veterinarian Inger has dedicated herself fully to this area and almost solely works with organic and free-range herds. Inger is not afraid to roll up her sleeves and participate actively in the daily work on the farm. She understands that it is in the close, practical contact with both animal and farmer that the best solutions are found.
